Any discussion of the use of plant operating data with management or operational staff will quickly spawn some variation on the above cliche-and the cliche is correct.The 1980s saw the evolution of distributed control systems (DCSs),which produce large amounts of data.In the 1990s,enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems evolved which demand a lot of data.Problematic is the layer separating the data from the business,commonly referred to as the enterprise manufacturing intelligence (EMI) level.
