Worldwide, environmental laws now mandate the production of cleaner fuels. Consequently, refiners are experiencing severe pressure from market forces and regulatory pressures. On the regulatory side, stringent product specifications limit sulfur content and gasoline composition while the emission limits for SO_x, NO_x, CO, CO_2 and particulates are being tightened.
