Experienced reliability professionals know that even the premier equipment standards used in the hydrocarbon processing industry (HPI) occasionally fall short of defining the best, most reliable, or safest available technology. A widely used industry standard begins by stating: "The purchaser may desire to modify, delete or amplify sections of this standard." The preface to another standard is worded: "Standards are not intended to inhibit purchasers or producers from purchasing or producing products made to specifications other than this one."
