Today, maintenance has more sophisticated technology, better tools, higher quality replacement parts, and more innovative maintenance programs and methodologies than ever. Yet, many maintenance departments are failing to reach the expectations and returns on investment that management had envisioned. The reaction, in many cases, is to throw more technology and the latest and greatest maintenance management fad at the problem. However, these new initiatives may also fail to meet their goals unless a company takes a hard look at the technical and mechanical skills of personnel performing maintenance functions.
