Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Co. Ltd. (SSPC) has been closely working with the East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) on technical research to improve operational efficiency reduce energy consumption and increase ethylene production. Acetylene trace levels form in steam cracking furnaces during the process. The amount of acetylene formed is a function of the furnace feed composition, furnace design and operating conditions. Note that acetylene fractionates with ethylene. A tolerable/allowable limit for this component is < 1 ppm for polymer-grade ethylene.
