Largest German cellulosic ethanol plant starts up

Swiss specialty chemicals company Clariant recently inaugurated Germany's biggest pilot plant (FIG. 3) in Straubing, Bavaria. The ?28 million (MM) plant, which is based on Clariant's sunliquid technology, will produce up to 1,000 metric tons of cellulosic ethanol from around 4,500 metric tons of wheat straw. The pilot plant will confirm the technological feasibility of the sunliquid technique, and the process will later be used in an industrial-scale plant.
