In North America, recent changes in the crude quality basket, most commonly heavy, high solids crudes and more recently light tight oil (LTO), has resulted in a new learning curve on the blends now being processed throughout the market. The significant increase in production of LTOs has also increased the profit potential of refiners that can receive and run them (along with the benefit of low energy costs compared to other regions), so demand is high.
