One can easily make a business case for implementing a digital asset approach solely on the returns achieved in project handover. But this would be to neglect its long term value. Once an asset has entered service it begins a working life of continual changes, undergoing maintenance and modifications that could quickly leave its information assets out of date. It is estimated that, within three years, a third of a plant's engineering information can become unreliable. Because one does not know which third, every item of information for every maintenance task must be painstakingly revalidated. In contrast, the digital asset approach ensures that information can remain trustworthy and accessible.
