Biomedical applications of self-assembled or molecular gels are discussed by F. Braet et al. in their Focus Review in the latest issue of Chemistry - An Asian Journal. The group, based at the University of New South Wales, report the use of such self-assembled gels in three-dimensional cell-culture studies, drug delivery and tissue engineering. Their reversibility, well-defined chemical nature and relative ease of synthesis make them a particularly interesting target for conjugating or mixing with drugs or bioactive molecules.
