Ken Basden MRACI CChem (1926-2010) was one of a now-diminishing generation of academics who got their feet on the academic ladder, one might say, the hard way: by appointment to a lecturing position on graduation at Baccalaureate level and working for a PhD concurrently with the pressures and responsibilities of a full-time academic post. An Australian born in 1926 would probably have had his early working life disrupted by World War 2, and it would not have been until he was well into his twenties that he could have even started to orientate himself in a peacetime career; by this time he probably would have had a family to support as well.
