摘要

A special section of this journal issue contains five papers addressing the role of water-level fluctuations in North American prairie wetlands and providing examples of how these fluctuations interact with the functioning of shallow, littoral systems in lakes and adjacent wetlands. Central in most of these studies are the relationships between the food web, vegetation and variations of the water level at the very different - daily, seasonal and multi-annual - timescales. Specifically, the three wetlands included in the study are: Lake Ontario marshes, St. Lawrence River in Quebec, Canada and Lake Okeechobee in Florida, USA..
