Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) was first diagnosed in Guangdong Province, China, in 2002, ultimately spreading to 29 countries where it caused 776 deaths and over 8000 respiratory infections.1 Researchers identified the SARS coronavirus (SARS-CoV) as the etiologic agent of SARS in 200323 and subsequently the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) of the US. National Institutes of Health (NIH) labelled it a Category C pathogen, along with other highly transmissible agents of potential biodefense importance.4
