Process Safety implementing successful management of change programme

As in any other industry,change is a way of life in the chemical process industry.In today's global competitive environment,organisations continously innovate and implement changes to cut costs,improve efficiency and increase production.Managing change improperly in a chemical process industry can have disastrous consequences.The Flixborough disaster in 1974 and the Bhopal gas tragedy in 1984 are classic examples of this.The cost of an incident caused by an improperly managed change ranges from the cost of a process interruption/incident to potentially catastrophic consequences with business interruption.This article explains the requirements of Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA)(USA) management of change element of the process safety management system and the pitfalls one should avoid while implementing a management of change programme.
