Sir Herbert Maxwell, Bt, KT, PC, FRS, LlD (Glasgow), DCL (Durham), VMH, is now largely forgotten, except perhaps in his native Scotland. But for many years through the last decades of the nineteenth century and the first of the twentieth he was a considerable public figure: a member of one of Scotland's most distinguished families, a great landowner, a politician, a historian, a naturalist and an authority on plants and gardens. In private, however, he was a sensitive, self-doubting aesthete, deeplyaffected by his strange upbringing and in time deeply affecting his descendants.
