Dublin and the Dillon Garden

Dublin's Phoenix Park is the largest public open space of any European city. So much space is there that though you might occasionally witness a crowd (as in 'a crowd of us went out to dinner') - for a race meeting, a hurling or football match, for wedding photographs (it's a popular venue) or for the zoo - you'll never find it crowded. It isn't a garden as such, or very little of it is. It is a lightly wooded succession of open spaces the Fifteen Acres, the White Field - and groves - The Wilderness, Fury Glen, Oldtown Wood - linked by roads, footpaths and rides, with the occasional bit of shrubbery and cultivated beds. The spirit of its far-off origins - a deer park, an outdoor larder - lingers on in the warily grazing herds of deer.
