At the end of Plants from the Edge of the World: New Explorations in the Far East (Timber Press, 2005) co-authors Mark Flanagan and Tony Kirkham concluded thatDuringour time together in the field, we developed as individuals, drawing not just from the cultures we experienced and the people we met, but from each other. We experienced highs and lows that demanding fieldwork always brings. We endured ill health,fatigue and disappointment, but most of all we experienced elation, excitement and the satisfaction that comes with hard-won objectives. Throughout this roller coaster of emotions in the mountains and valleys of eastern Asia [we] grew up and left a legacy that we are satisfied we can be judged by.
