The effect MS medium supplemented with auxins (2,4-D, IBA or IAA) and sucrose (3, 5 or 7%) on the production of phenolic compounds by cell suspensions of P. ginseng [P. pseudoginseng] was investigated. Cell growth was best with 2,4-D (4.38 g/flask)and worst with IAA (1.89 g/flask). PAL activity and phenolic content/flask were lowest with IBA. PAL activity was highest with IAA. As IAA concentrations increased from 10-6 to 10-4 M, cell growth increased, phenolic compound content/flask increased (from 2.06 to 5.01 mug/flask), but PAL activity decreased. Cell growth was best on a medium containing 3% sucrose, but the highest production of phenolic compounds was observed after 3 weeks on a medium containing 5% sucrose.
