Influence of planting depth and duration of cold treatment on growth and flowering of Liatris spicata.

The effects of cold (30, 60, 90 or 120 days of cold treatment at 5degC) and planting depth (half corm above soil, corm just below soil surface, or corm 1.5 or 3 cm below soil surface) on the growth of L. spicata (cv. Floristan Violet) in pots were investigated. Days to flowering decreased with increasing period of cold treatment and with increasing depth of planting. Sixty days of cold treatment was not sufficient to break dormancy except for corms planted half above the soil surface or just below the soil surface.
