Alys Fowler looks at micropropagation and its role in modern plant production and conservation. The early 1970s saw the start of the large-scale application of micropropagation in horticulture. By the early 1990s, there was a proliferation of firms jumping on the bandwagon with the hope of getting rich on the next bigthing. Today, the micropropagation industry looks very different in the UK. Although micropropagation is still indispensable in the propagation of many valuable horticulture crops, in the past 10 years, the number of firms in the UK offering services has declined.
