Lysimachia is a genus that contains many highly ornamental perennials. There are several easy-to-grow plants among them, with brightly coloured flowers and sturdy stems, such as L. clethroides Award of Garden Merit (AGM) and L. punctata, and they areexcellent at providing fast-spreading cover when desired. But this has its downside as many of them tend to be a bit too successful and need to be kept under control. There are up to 180 species of Lysimachia. The genus is made up of hardy to frost-tender perennials, either herbaceous or evergreen. Their habit can be upright or prostrate, with some forming excellent ground cover. Their flowers are variably shaped, from the tapered racemes of clethroides to the cup-shaped flowers of L. nummularia. They are usually yellow or white but sometimes pink or purple.
