Remember last winter? It was predicted to be mild. But like the barbecue summer before, what we got was something of a shock. Freezing temperatures and deep snow falls meant emergency services were stretched, deliveries failed, workers were unable toget into work and school children and students built snowmen instead of attending classes. The worst of it was that it went on and on and on. Local authorities, contractors, grounds managers and businesses all need fail-safe plans in case we face a toughwinter. Snow and ice clearance should not be left to chance. The good news for grounds managers is that machinery and equipment already in your shed can be used with any of a wide range of attachments for clearing most types of snow or de-icing. And, perhaps not surprisingly after last winter's experience, a great deal of new kit has come to market.
