Step forward for green infrastructure: New standards aim to ensure green infrastructure is included in the planning process

The Government's urgency to develop homes and regenerate towns and cities has triggered fears of compromise on design quality and the need for green spaces and infrastructure. But the new cross-department strategy World Class Places - launched last week by Communities & Local Government (CLG) secretary Hazel Blears and Department for Culture, Media & Sport secretary Andy Burnham - features a series of commitments to the sector. A critical component of World Class Places is a plan to develop new planning guidance for local authorities on green space and green infrastructure.
