Trials showcase field-holding capacity

The field-holding capacity of leafy salad varieties is becoming ever more crucial. Fluctuating summer weather is creating major peaks and troughs in consumer demand, in turn causing production headaches for UK growers. Varieties with a short harvest window can prove difficult to manage -just two or three days' extended field holding can make the difference between achieving a good price or having no choice but to plough a crop in. It is, therefore, little surprise that field-holding capabilities werea key talking point at the National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB) open day last month, held courtesy of JB Shropshire & Sons at Engine Farm, Cambridgeshire. Disease resistance also remains high on the agenda as changing pesticide legislation sends shock waves through the industry.
