Growers must use highly mechanised systems to keep up with supermarkets' demands, says Mike Beardall. Today's fast-moving world is probably more stressful for growers of fruit and vegetables than for any other sector supplying perishable goods. The speed and efficiency of getting produce from the farms to the shops, or keepingfruit and vegetables in cold storage till the time is right, are the main priorities for all growers. And to meet retailers' demands a network of transport companies operating 24 hours a day, 364 days a year is essential.
