摘要

DEFRA's decision to allow genetically modified (GM) potato crop trials in the UK (Grower, 14 December) has highlighted a rift within the industry. It appears that growers, looking to maximise crop potential while reducing associated costs such as pesticide usage, welcome GM developments within the potato sector while those working near the consumer end of the chain have raised concerns over public opinion and environmental safety aspects. The NFU, which last month announced the launch of its Why Farming Matters campaign, has welcomed the move by BASF Plant Science to trial its GM potato in Cambridgeshire and Derbyshire from April, and has defended DEFRA's decision to give the go ahead.
