The native foxglove, Digitalis purpurea, conjures up images of the English countryside. It is well known to even the most amateur British gardeners, often used in cottage garden schemes and woodland plantings. The genus comprises more than 20 perennial and biennial species and cultivars, developed by breeders or coming from distinct locations across central and southern Europe, from Portugal to the Balkans, It has even been found growing at altitudes up to 1,000m. The range of plants in the genus, from the large-flowered perennial D. x mertonensis Award of Garden Merit (AGM) to the rust-coloured biennial D, ferrug-inea AGM, offer a wide selection of flower colours for varying situations, from sunny sites to shady corners.
