The Heritage Lottery Fund's (HLF's) support for parks has done much to bring Britain's historic parks back to life. But often there is a tension between authentic restoration and meeting the needs of today's park-using public. Managers of Priory Parkin Reigate, Surrey, faced just such a challenge in marrying an 18th-century stately home and landscape with facilities for well-off local users with high expectations. Much of this responsibility fell to Land Use Consultants (LUC) principal Adrian Wikeley, who has overseen the 18-month, 7m restoration of the park, which officially reopened in May. Wikeley describes the work as "a combination of a restoration and a redesign". "I haven't intended to be historically accurate," he says.
