Osmanthus

Plants in the Osmanthus genus have an intoxicating fragrance when in flower, but for the rest of the year they almost disappear into the background. Despite this, many growers think they are underused, and consider that their evergreen foliage is a useful foil for other border plants. In addition, their pervasive scent adds another level of interest. About 20 species of Osmanthus grow across Asia and the southern US. Often they are mistaken for hollies because of their prickly leaves, but they can be told apart as holly leaves are held alternately and Osmanthus opposite.
