A sector scheme for highways work could set new standards across the industry. Gavin HcEwan reports. Most in the tree-care industry can agree that promoting greater professionalism is a worthwhile goal. But as the delayed attempt to enforce a single standard for arboricultural work along the UK's highways network has shown, the devil is in the detail. National Highways Sector Schemes (NHSS) are quality-management schemes designed to implement ISO 9001 in the context of the UK's trunk roads. There are19 sector schemes in total, covering all aspects of highway maintenance from lighting to crash barriers. "They have proved extremely suc-cessful in areas such as vehicle recovery," says BALI technical director Neil Huck, who has been involved in drafting the latest of these, number 18, which covers environment and landscape.
