Solidarity paramount if trade's true value is to be recognised

Unification was the key word at the All Party parliamentary group reception held last week. If UK horticulture wants to be taken seriously as an industry, it must present a united front that leaves legislators in no doubt about its economic and social value. This was the message hammered home by speaker after speaker at this year's All Party Parliamentary Horticulture & Gardening Group reception, which was held at the House of Commons and was funded by the Corporation of London. Horticulture minister Lord Whitty said so, horticulture group secretary Brian Donohoe MP said so and TV personality Alan Titchmarsh said so. Whitty even appeared to offer specific words of encouragement for organisations involved in the formation of the National Horticultural Forurn when he suggested that a loose "confederation" of industry bodies would help the sector to "punch your weight better".
