This highly saleable genus is tough, pest-free and gives periods of foliage and flower interest. Cotinus is a popular landscaping and garden plant with several attractive attributes. The plants are tough, with a long and varied season of interest fromfoliage colour, exotic flowers in summer and vivid autumn tones. The different coloured varieties can also be mixed to striking effect. The genus Cotinus consists of three species of deciduous trees and shrubs, found growing across the Mediterranean, South America and China, of which two - C. coggygria Award of Garden Merit (AGM) and C. obovatus AGM -are cultivated. The common name, smoke bush, derives from the plume-like flowers that resemble puffs of smoke.
