And head grounds manager at the pound 57m project, Steve Welch, will be the most famous turf professional in Britain. The former winner of theInstitute of Groundsmanship (loG) Professional Football Groundsman of the Year, Welch took the Wembley job in October after a row about how little it paid. Welch says the debate was about whether or not the salary - advertised at the loG top pay rate ofpound 30,000-35,000 - matched the importance of thejob.
