MYFIRST GARDENING experience didn't revolve around edible plants. I had a 4H flower garden when I was 10 years old, which taught me the basics of what plants need to thrive. But my mother always grew a few vegetables in her garden, and when I married,I helped my husband with his vegetable garden. The usual sweet corn, green beans, lettuce, radishes, tomatoes and carrots went in each spring and were harvested throughout the summer. These were staples; it wouldn't be a proper summer without them. Each August, I could count on gaining five pounds during sweet-corn season. It was nothing for me to make an entire meal of several ears of sweet corn, slathered in butter.
