Ratcliff Wharf, London--A Room with a View

In the 1980's the buildings were redeveloped for flats with an additional floor consisting of cavity construction and a rather poorly braced steel beam and timber joist floor and roof. The owners of a second and third floor penthouse flat recently carried out extensive alterations and a refurbishment of the whole flat. During an early meeting one of the clients described the frequent drama of seeing the weather coming in from the south-west from the second floor, and asked if the brick piers that obstructed this view could be removed. This question led to the design of a scheme that removed two of the three brick piers of the river front wall, pushed a wholly glazed box out from the now open corner, and added a balcony across the opened-up part of the river wall.
