Chemical and Bioloqical Threats: The Nature and Risk

On the night of June 27, 1994, members of the Aum Shinrikyo religious sect parked a delivery truck 100 yd from an apartment building in Matsumoto, Japan. Concealed in the truck were 20 kg of the nerve agent sarin and a battery-powered vaporizer. At about 10:40 p.m., when a light wind shifted toward the building, men in respirators dispensed sarin from the trucks cargo area, generating a plume that traveled into and over two buildings. The sarin killed seven people and sickened about 200.
