There has been a growing number of air conditioning systems installed utilizing the concept of a Ventilation Air Conditioning (VAC) system separate from the system which controls the temperature within the space. The motivation for this shift from the classical "mixing chamber" approach, which originated in the 1930s, becomes evident when one observes the overwhelming advantages of the VAC system concept. The purpose of this article is to explore the reasons for this shifting paradigm and to better prepare the reader for designs utilizing the improved technology. The fundamental force behind the shift is simply that the VAC system concept works better. That is, it provides a superior solution to the design parameters. To focus on this, let's consider the evolution of air conditioning throughout the twentieth century.
