In September 2001, PPL Corp. (formerly known as Pennsylvania Power and Light) announced it would be working with Liberty Property Trust to build a new eight-story office building across the street from its headquarters in Allentown, Pa. In keeping with its corporate vision, the building was to be environmentally friendly. To help benchmark the energy savings and environmental impact of the building, the U.S. Green Building Councils LEED raring system was employed. The points-based system rates a building's energy and environmental design and awards a rating level based on the number of points accrued. The design criteria were based on a LEED Silver rating. The design team later revised this and the final submission was for a LEED Gold raring, which was awarded in February, 2004.
