Many biological systems are capable of regulating andcontrolling the precipitation and crystal growth of mineralswith outstanding properties compared to syntheticmaterials, which is facilitated by a multiplicity of biologicalmacromolecules. Thus, there is also increasing interest inthe control of the material nucleation using additives suchas metal ions, low-molecular weight compounds, syntheticpolymers, or biological macromolecules.
