In 1872, James Smith Norrie, our first government analyst, reported the isolation of potassium hydrogen oxalate from M. spiralis and, quite reasonably, supposed that this compound was solely responsible for the plant's toxicity (Norrie 1872). The real culprit was a much more interesting compound.
