Networks, gendered differences and rigid notions of the 'ideal worker' were some of the hot topics for women researchers at a recent University of Melbourne forum. In the August issue of Chemistry in Australia, Margaret Shell, Chief Executive of the ARC, reflected on some of the changes and progress made by women in chemistry in Australia over the past 30 years. Women now hold some of the most important leadership positions in Australian science. Nevertheless the overall pattern of a very leaky pipeline is still creating some cause for concern both here and in the USA.
