Melbourne University Chemical Society celebrates its 1000th meeting

The Melbourne University Chemical Society (MUCS) is the oldest Chemical Society in Australia and was founded in 1903, roughly 50 years after the first Chemistry lectures were held at the University of Melbourne in 1856. During its history, MUCS has played a vital role in promoting chemistry in Melbourne andAustralia. Included among the previous 999 lecturers are Nobel Prize winners Lord Alexander Todd, Melvin Calvin, Linus Pauling, Sir John Cornforth and Peter Doherty (Laureate Professor, University of Melbourne); Fellows of the Royal Society Sir MacFarlane Burnet, Sir Ewart Jones, Dame Kathleen Lonsdale and Professor J. Stuart Anderson; as well as speakers from almost every country.On 17 August, MUCS celebrated its 1000th meeting, which coincided with the International Year of Chemistry, and was attended by over 250 people.
