With the current worldwide emphasis on finding alternatives to fossil-fuel-driven engines, considerable research has focused upon methods for the on-board storage of gaseous fuels such as methane and, in particular, hydrogen. In this regard, open framework materials, in which metal ions are bridged by ligands, have received much attention. To be viable it is essential that the host framework material be as light as possible. Much of the research in recent years has focused on systems in which relatively heavy atoms such as zinc form part of the connecting nodes in the frameworks.
