Implementation of mobile GIS in field work

摘要

Development of geographic information systems for mobile and hand held computer devices requires significantly modified approach in comparison to development of more traditional GISs. Main issues to be addressed are efficient handling of limited memory and processing power, appropriate management and presentation of information on highly restricted devices and design of appropriate user interfaces. This paper presents mobile GIS solution intended for field work. Mobile GIS is an extension of central enterprise GIS maintained by a company involved in any kind of field work characterized by usage of spatial data. Mobile GIS operating on mobile computer platform is substituting thematic paper maps widely used today. It is enabling field work personnel to always have access to most accurate and up to date spatial data. Also, this system automates the process of updating central enterprise GIS with data acquired in the field, process which has been up to date tedious and error prone.
