As home healthcare professionals and visiting nurses review their schedule of visits, it is easy to forget the legions of staff who work behind the scenes to also support home-bound patients in less visible ways. For example, the Philips Lifeline call center in Framing-ham, Mass., houses employees who, 24 hours a day, every day, receive calls from patients through their personal emergency response system. These highly trained call center professionals help distressed patients with compassion and grace; not to mention the state-of-the-art technology that supports the calls. It is reassuring to know that in challenging times when home healthcare can feel like a lonely place, VNAs are in fact not alone.
