摘要

When I began consciously doing Pilates exercises back in the 1990s, I experienced noticeable strengthening of core muscles and significantly greater control of muscles groups throughout my body. Interestingly, Joseph Pilates first called his approach to exercise "contrology" because of this feature of the practice.1 I had unknowingly done Pilates for years when taking dance classes, but it was not identified as such, and I did not realize that he had brought his approach to New York City back in the 1940s. Dancers took to his methods readily because they became stronger and prevented or rehabilitated from injuries better. Because of the dance community, a powerful movement was born.
