Compartmentalisation, a defining feature of biological systems, allows different chemical reactions to be carried out simultaneously without interference. Synthetic counterparts to biological compartments (e.g. liposomes) have been assembled but frequently lack continuous reaction capabilities. Polyelectrolyte capsules assembled by the layer-by-layer technique have proven to be successful microreactor vessels with continuous reaction capabilities due to their tunable permeability.
