In the 1990s, the first international effort began to accurately map the distribution of CO, dissolved in the ocean. Measurements of atmospheric CO, showed that only about half of the CO, emitted through human activity remained in the atmosphere. The only natural sinks that could be storing the missing carbon were the oceans and the land biosphere (plants). The future efficiency of these natural sinks is an important consideration in developing CO2 emission strategies.
