The common cold is a self-limiting condition, caused by a viral infection. Typically, the individual with a cold experiences a general feeling of malaise, sneezing, watery nasal discharge, sore throat, headache, and upper respiratory tract congestion. Colds can be caused by more than 200 different viruses that are capable of infecting the upper respiratory tract. The rhinoviruses (rhin, derived from Greek, meaning "nose") are responsible for causing approximately 30% to 50% of all colds.
