In early 1911 Captain （later Admiral Sir） Herbert W. Richmond, then serving in command of HMS Dreadnought as flag captain to the commander-in-chief of the British Home Fleet, Admiral Sir William H. May, confided to his diary details of an account of a fleet exercise, commonly known as a 'P.Z.' after the old signal for it.1 The Red Fleet in this evolution was commanded by Sir George J. S. Warrender, Bart., Rear-Admiral Commanding the Second Cruiser Squadron, who flew his flag in the armoured cruiser HMS Natal.1 His flag captain was Captain （later Admiral Sir） W. Reginald Hall, who achieved fame as Director of Naval Intelligence in the First World War.
