摘要

In 1955 G. B. Rubin de Cervin published an article in The Mariner's Mirror titled 'A Problem in Naval Archaeology'.1 This article was about an ancient bronze artefact, probably of Roman republican age, which in 1597 had been found in the bottom of Genoa harbour during dredging works. The artefact, which is currently held by the Royal Armoury in Turin, is a single casting: its solid forward part is shaped as a boar head while the much damaged rear part is a box-like hollow casing, which has a trapezoidal longitudinal section (figure 1).2 It was found in an area that in Roman times was a stretch of open shore (figures 2 and 3).
